Why we care about swallowing!
See the video below to compare a normal swallow to a disordered swallow (Dysphagia)

What you're seeing in the example of a disordered swallow (dysphagia) is someone's drink spilling partially down their windpipe, straight toward their lungs. Dysphagia can significantly increase the risk of aspiration pneumonia, choking, malnutrition and dehydration. So what do we do about it?

As qualified Speech Pathologists; we can assist in preventing dysphagia complications by:

- providing safe swallow strategies

- providing swallow rehabilitation / strengthening exercises

- trialling various swallow manoeuvres

- modifying the texture of diet and/ or fluids so that they're more manageable to chew and/or swallow

- educating clients & their families / support staff on texture modification to ensure safe oral intake in the home

Educational Services

We can provide education on dysphagia, modified diet textures and thickened fluid preparation to staff in a range of settings, including but not limited to:

- Aged Care Centres

- Supported Accommodation Facilities

- Respite Centres

- Transitional Care Facilities

- Individual families/care teams

- Special education settings

Additionally, we can provide education on the importance of good Oral Hygiene in disability.
